Всё дело в том, что топор погружается в полено и импульс гасится. А вы попробуйте топором по чему-нибудь металлическому ударить. Ощущения не из приятных, да и топор сам из рук выпрыгивает)

Всего лишь теория  Но всё же вполне вероятно, что, например, в начале обучения могла использоваться такая методика. Ведь невесомым клинком без сноровки не помашешь нормально)
